Anyone having a plan of starting a food related business such as Processing of food / Manufacturing /Distributor/Wholesaler /Retailer it’s mandatory for all startups to register under FSSAI irrespective of the Investment or turnover.

Type of FSSAI Registration | License

There are three types of the Food Safety registration or FSSAI License category

FSSAI Registration -FSSAI Registration can be obtained by small business which have annual turnover less than 12 lakh. So business startups which have a expected turnover of less than 12 lakhs in a year can go for FSSAI basic registration.

FSSAI State License - Food business already doing business under Fssai registration, If their turnover crosses 12 lakhs in a year but not exceeding 20 Crores. then its mandotary to convert to State License of FSSAI.

FSSAI Central License – Business entities which are mandatorily required to register under central license

Importers and exporters of food products for commercial use mandatorily required to register under FSSAI central license.
Retailer, Distributor, Supplier, Caterer, Restaurant, Marketer having turnover more than 20 crores in a year.
Wholesaler having turnover of more than 30 Crores in a year.
Five Star Hotels
Food catering services having units in establishments and units of Central Government agencies are required to register under Central license.
Storage, Wholesaler, Retailer and Distributor having premises in central government agencies

Dairy units processing more than 50,000 litres of milk per day or 2500 Tonnes of soild per annum
Vegetable oil processing units having more than 2 tonnes production per day.
Slaughtering units processing more than 50 large animals per day / more than 150 small animals per day / More than 1000 poultry birds per day.
Meat processing units having more than 500 kg of meat per day or 150 Tonnes per year.

Which Food Businesses are required to get registration under FSSAI?

FSSAI registration are issued to very small businesses having turnover of less than 12 lakhs per annum, The registration certificate issued should be kept at the premises of the Food business operator.
Which Food businesses are required to get state license under FSSAI?

Food business already doing business under Fssai registration, If their turnover crosses 12 lacs in a year but not exceeding 20 Crores. Then its mandatory to convert to State License of FSSAI or New business having projected turnover exceeds 12 lakhs then have to go for License.
Which Food businesses are required to get Central License under FSSAI?

What is the validity of a license and when it should be renewed?

A license is valid till the period it’s issued unless otherwise it’s cancelled by the department, Application for renewal must be made before the expiry of the license and license can be renewed for a maximum period of 5 years.

Can a Food business operator carry out different activity in same premises?

Yes, Food business can carry out different business activity in one premise, since FSSAI is premises based license.
Obtaining single FSSAI license is enough to do Food business at different location?

No, FSSAI registration/license are premises based, if the business operator having more than one premises in a city, have to obtain registration/license for each of the premises.
Is it mandatory for pharmacies to obtain FSSAI if they sell Health supplements?

Every food business operator including pharmacies or medicals have to obtain FSSAI license/registration if they sell health supplements/Nutraceutical products.
What happens if a FSSAI registration/license is not renewed before expiry?

FSSAI license has to be renewed before the date of expiry else the license/registration will expire and then have to apply for fresh registration.
